Solve The Cube 2x2 Mode
Last updated:

Solve The Cube offers a 2x2 cube as well as the classic 3x3. Gameplay footage shows both Default and Zero Assist versions of 3x3 and 2x2, which matches the description's promise of "different cube types, same real algorithms". The 2x2 is the easiest way to start solving on your own.

2x2 modes in the game
| Mode | What you do | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Default 2x2 | Memorise the key sequence and type it to solve the cube | Short key bars, quick wins |
| Zero Assist 2x2 | Solve a real scrambled 2x2 yourself | Learning to solve without help |
| Default 3x3 | Longer key sequences | Standard races |
| Zero Assist 3x3 | Real 3x3 solve | Experienced cubers |
Whether 2x2 rounds pay the same Coins and rating as 3x3 rounds is to be verified.
How a 2x2 differs from a 3x3
- A 2x2 has only 8 corner pieces. There are no edges or centres.
- Because there are no centres, any colour can go on any side. You decide which colour is "white" by building it.
- Every 2x2 position can be solved in 11 moves or fewer (half-turn metric), so key bars are much shorter.
- It has 3,674,160 possible positions, compared with about 43 quintillion on a 3x3.
A simple 4-step 2x2 solve
- First layer: build one full face with matching side colours. Insert corners with
R U R' U', the same trick as the 3x3 white corners. - Orient the top: turn the cube over and use Sune
R U R' U R U2 R'until the top face is one colour. - Permute the top: if two corners need swapping, use
R U2 R' U' R U2 L' U R' U' L. - Finish: turn the top layer (
U,U'orU2) to line it up.
This is the 3x3 beginner method with the middle-layer step removed. Full details are on how to solve a Rubik's Cube, and notation is explained on cube notation.
Racing tips for 2x2
- Accuracy beats speed. With so few keys, one wrong key and an Undo can cost the round.
- Learn the key bar in one look. Short 2x2 sequences fit in your memory in two or three chunks.
- Watch for powerups. Freeze, Scramble and Blind can hit you mid-solve in some lobbies (see modifiers & powerups).
- Move up when ready. Once you win most 2x2 rounds, switch to 3x3 to earn more and work toward the On Fire! badge.
