Rubik's Cube Notation for Solve The Cube

Last updated:

Cube notation is the alphabet of every algorithm. Solve The Cube says it uses "same real algorithms" as a real Rubik's Cube, and the in-game key bar turns those algorithms into letters you type. Knowing notation helps you read guides, learn methods and remember long key sequences.

The six face letters

LetterFaceTurn direction (looking at that face)
RRightClockwise
LLeftClockwise
UUp (top)Clockwise
DDown (bottom)Clockwise
FFrontClockwise
BBackClockwise

Modifiers: prime and double

  • Prime (') means counter-clockwise: R' is the right face turned the other way.
  • 2 means a half turn: U2 turns the top face 180°. Direction doesn't matter.
  • Lowercase or w (r, Rw) means a wide turn of two layers. x, y, z rotate the whole cube.

Reading an algorithm

An algorithm is a list of moves read left to right. The famous "sexy move" R U R' U' means: right face clockwise, top clockwise, right face counter-clockwise, top counter-clockwise. Repeat it six times and the cube returns to where it started, which is a good way to practise.

How notation connects to the game's keys

Solve The Cube doesn't show R or U on screen. It shows a key bar of letters such as W D S A I A K A I A, and a counter like 20 / 45 KEYS. Each key is one face turn. The default keys are Q W E A S D on the left hand and I J K L on the right, plus Undo (see controls). Which key turns which face, and in which direction, is to be verified because it isn't shown in any official source, and the Settings menu offers keybind presets that can change it.

What we can say: the key bar is an algorithm written in the game's own alphabet. A 45-key bar is a 45-move solution. Methods like Corners First, CFOP, ZZ and Petrus shorten that bar (see methods).

Memory tricks for long key bars

  • Chunk it. Read 4–6 keys at a time and repeat them in your head, like a phone number.
  • Spot triggers. Real algorithms repeat patterns like R U R' U'. In the key bar they show up as repeating letter groups.
  • Use inspection time. Read ahead while the timer hasn't started.
  • Undo fast. A wrong key turns the cube the wrong way. Undo it immediately rather than "fixing it later".

Notation cheat sheet

Most useful beginner algorithms: R U R' U' (corner insert), F R U R' U' F' (yellow cross), R U R' U R U2 R' (Sune). The full beginner method is on how to solve a Rubik's Cube.

Frequently asked questions

What does R' mean on a Rubik's Cube?

R prime: turn the right face counter-clockwise, as seen when looking at the right face.

Does Solve The Cube use real cube notation?

It uses real algorithms, but shows them as a key bar of letters (Q W E A S D and I J K L) rather than R, U and F.

Which key turns which face in Solve The Cube?

This has not been confirmed in an official source, and keybind presets can change it. We mark it as to be verified.
